Hello there, I’m Journey.
There’s two words come after my name, Youth Hostel. I’d like to share with you how I met him.
One-way ticket to Yunnan, there wasn’t actual schedule and I didn’t know where the destination was.
When it comes to travel, people easily put meanings with gorgeous words. I would never try to hide the truth to you, I just wanted to ran away that time.
It was in 2013, the joke of the end of the world just passed, houses prices of the city keep rising, the feeling was real. The classes of society was stiff as merry go round, it takes you revolving and revolving, while you never really get a chance to leave where you stand.
I wasn’t aware that I had a lot of expectation of our society, but never asked myself what I could do for it.
After the plane landed to Yunnan, I immediately drove to Xishuangbanna, the beginning of Tea Horse Ancient Road. That time was Dai’s yearly Water-Splashing Festival, I was still a person filled with ‘City Atmosphere’, due to the festival, it was hard for me to find a “room” to stay. It was the time I noticed this travel options which has been popular quite a time there: hostel.
The spirits of hostel are sharing, Eco-friendly and self-discipline, through these spirits to cut down the cost of travel and the burden of environment. One single room normally being separated to 4-10 beds for people to stay, everyone share bathrooms and the kitchen. Less privacy, but more people contact.
The person who slept in the bunk bed next to me was a boy from Guangzhou. He said he just ended one relationship and decided to visit Lijiang, where people consider as a city romance are everywhere.
The new friend who slept in the upper bunk bed is from Zhangjiakou, he quit his cars sale job and decided to visit Dali to see the Bai Tie-dyeing fabrics, he was considering to bring the techniques back to his hometown and open some business.
After a long conversation and everyone started to know each other much more, it was the time to deal with the hunger issues naturally. When we walked to the lobby of the hostel discussing what’s the famous local food, we met other backpackers from Wuhan, Chengdu, Huizhou who are also thinking what to eat for dinner.
Then the journey from Xishuangbanna-Dali- Lijiang to Chengdu has started, before any of us aware. No one knows if everyone will still on the road together tomorrow, or how long will we remember each other. The only thing matters is we seize the moment we are together.
It was the first time I feel the atmosphere of hostel, we share the same space and a period of time. From that time, I started to embrace times when schedule can’t win against reality. I also started to understand I shouldn’t only focus on the far goal of any schedule, but also the moment of every now.
I had stayed in over 120 hostels during the trip, and the experiences became important in my backpackers’ life.
When I try to recall the journey, I couldn’t really remember where I had visited. But every person I met, every story I heard, everything I knew in hostels are clear.
It is the time I knew what people said: Your life is the combination of my journey.
thenI didn’t want to run away any longer. I moved back to Tainan, and set up Journey Hostel.
Hostels discuss youth and life. Life is every moment of ‘now’, it’s not the old time in your memory or the future you imagine. Life is so close that it’s waiting you to make a decision, to walk to your ideal moments.
We are expecting to make this space to let everyone meet each other, and create an unexpected view of Tainan.
